Summary

Featuring both the story of an historic, unforgettable win and insight into the life of an indelible champion, Choosing to Run is a truly inspirational memoir from Boston Marathon winner and Olympian Des Linden, sharing her personal story and what motivates her to keep showing up。

When Des woke up on April 16, 2018, the morning of the Boston Marathon, it was 39 degrees and raining, with high, gusty winds。 The weather didn’t bother her。 In fact, she thought it might be a blessing。 She was far from peak form—recovering from illness and questioning her running future—and didn’t expect much of herself that day。

But as she ticked off mile after mile in the brutal conditions, passing familiar landmarks on the course she knew by heart, something shifted。 Opportunity unexpectedly presented itself。 Des tapped into her inner strength and remembered all of the reasons she loved to race。

Coming off Heartbreak Hill at Mile 22, Des took the lead and never relinquished it, becoming the 2018 Boston Marathon champion and the first American woman to win the race in thirty-three years。

Her career has always been defined by tenacity and an independent spirit, stretching back to her first competitive race in San Diego, when she beat better-outfitted, more experienced kids。 Des was a two-time All-American at Arizona State University, and as her collegiate years wound down, she decided she wasn’t done with the sport。 Des gambled on herself and moved to Michigan to give professional running a try。 As she rose through the elite ranks, she became increasingly determined to do things her way in an industry often bound by the status quo。

In her first book, readers will learn the story behind that the way Des trains, the way she thinks, her relationships with other great runners of her generation, and how much she values her family and friends。 They’ll read about her deep connection to the most famous marathon in the world, her two very different Olympic experiences, and how she defined new goals and set a world record at the 50-kilometer distance。

Most of all, they’ll learn what makes her get up and run every day。

A love letter to running and the marathon。

I prefer trails and the "race" of the road is not me, yet I have always followed and rooted for Des。 I remember watching her win the 2018 Boston live。 I cried。 I was so happy for her。 She always appears to have such grit, determination, honesty, and REALness。 I admire her strength and that she does not come across as a spoiled primadonna。 This book has only increased my respect for her as a runner and a person。 It was an easy read。 Inspiring。 Insightful。 The world needs more leaders like Des。 I prefer trails and the "race" of the road is not me, yet I have always followed and rooted for Des。 I remember watching her win the 2018 Boston live。 I cried。 I was so happy for her。 She always appears to have such grit, determination, honesty, and REALness。 I admire her strength and that she does not come across as a spoiled primadonna。 This book has only increased my respect for her as a runner and a person。 It was an easy read。 Inspiring。 Insightful。 The world needs more leaders like Des。 。。。more

A must read if you love Desi, Shalane, Kara。 A true telling of the 2018 BA 26。2。 Loved each chapter as it alternated between real life training and the day of the event。 Highly recommend。

Fast read and sucked me in。 Very inspiring。 Des is not only a talented runner, but this book shows her humanity and grit。

I’ve always admired Des Linden for her grit and her willingness to ruffle feathers in the sport (and I am also a Brooks loyalist)。 I love her even more after reading her memoir。 The concept of threading her story through each mile of the 2018 Boston Marathon was a brilliant choice。 Great story, fast paced, and inspiring to “older runners” who still have lots of athletic ambitions (👋)。

I loved this book。 Des Linden was the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in decades。 Chapters about the race are interspersed with chapters about her running life。 Even though you know how it ends, it's suspenseful。 Des comes across as down to earth--someone you'd like to know。 I loved this book。 Des Linden was the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in decades。 Chapters about the race are interspersed with chapters about her running life。 Even though you know how it ends, it's suspenseful。 Des comes across as down to earth--someone you'd like to know。 。。。more

Not going to lie, at the part when Des Linden crossed the finish line to become the first American woman to win Boston in 33 years, I cried a little。 Current and former distance runners of any level would connect to Choosing to Run, which packed more of a punch than I was expecting from the description。 I really became invested following her journey of rebuilding after a medical diagnosis。 Published just before the 2023 Boston Marathon, it also provided some personal motivation and inspiration f Not going to lie, at the part when Des Linden crossed the finish line to become the first American woman to win Boston in 33 years, I cried a little。 Current and former distance runners of any level would connect to Choosing to Run, which packed more of a punch than I was expecting from the description。 I really became invested following her journey of rebuilding after a medical diagnosis。 Published just before the 2023 Boston Marathon, it also provided some personal motivation and inspiration for me as I train for my first half marathon in four years, a bit of a rebuilding journey for me as well。I would dog ear pages with sentiments and feelings that resonated with me personally, and found myself folding more pages than I expected (which I can’t quote directly as I had an advanced, not final copy of the book):- wanting to feel like you are on your A game while simultaneously trying to temper your expectations during a rebuild- typically thriving on routine and consistency but having to learn to embrace how you feel that day and finding an upside to every run; not hitting planned splits can still be a win- getting back into shape sucks, but being in shape is awesome- running unfamiliar distances and terrains to avoid comparisons to past results while also not exposing that you’re not in prime conditionWould recommend this book to anyone who loves a good comeback/underdog story, particularly distance runners of any performance level。Thanks to Dutton/Penguin Books for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Desi (and Bonnie) has finally given us a running memoir that reads beautifully。 Well done! If you never run Boston, read this and you’ll have lived the experience along with Des。

Bad ass Des Linden。 Great inspiration to keep doing the work, whatever that is for you。

This book gave some great insight into some of the inner workings of elite training programs, agents, sponsors and race management。 I took a personal interest in this book since I was personally at many of events Des wrote about (I was there when she came in 2nd in 2011, the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, her win in 2018 and I was at the Red Sox game in 2019 and saw Des throw out the first pitch。

What a great book! Des Linden describes her Boston Marathon win in an engaging, can-hardly-put-it-down memoir。 As a distance runner, I especially enjoyed the content, but the writing is honest and inspirational and likely appealing to anyone who is interested in the hidden, personal struggles behind success。

Did not disappoint!!! Loved hearing the author read it as I was running。

Chapters alternate between a race recap on 2018 Boston and the story of her life。 Really enjoyed the replay of her thoughts while running in 2018。 Appreciated the unvarnished look at pro runner's chalenges - conflict with coaches, health issues, etc。 Chapters alternate between a race recap on 2018 Boston and the story of her life。 Really enjoyed the replay of her thoughts while running in 2018。 Appreciated the unvarnished look at pro runner's chalenges - conflict with coaches, health issues, etc。 。。。more

Finished Des's memoir while running the first 20 miler of my marathon build, which was the perfect setting。 She nailed the format of her story, interspersing details of her Boston win with the rest of her running (and traveling and reading and drinking) life。 Des is so cool and this made me admire her so much more。 Finished Des's memoir while running the first 20 miler of my marathon build, which was the perfect setting。 She nailed the format of her story, interspersing details of her Boston win with the rest of her running (and traveling and reading and drinking) life。 Des is so cool and this made me admire her so much more。 。。。more

Received as a free ebook ARC from NetGalley。I was so excited to receive this running memoir。 I love memoirs, reading about running, and strong female characters。 It shared Des Linden's ups and downs, but always coming back better and stronger。 It also highlighted more information that I didn't know such as she likes to read, loves dogs, had problems with her thyroid, likes bourbon, and other things besides running。 It was a quick easy read。 At times, it was confusing and jumped around in time。 I Received as a free ebook ARC from NetGalley。I was so excited to receive this running memoir。 I love memoirs, reading about running, and strong female characters。 It shared Des Linden's ups and downs, but always coming back better and stronger。 It also highlighted more information that I didn't know such as she likes to read, loves dogs, had problems with her thyroid, likes bourbon, and other things besides running。 It was a quick easy read。 At times, it was confusing and jumped around in time。 I usually don't mind that, but it was sometimes not clear what time frame was being discussed。 Maybe it was on purpose。 I still loved the book。 。。。more

I will never forget watching Des Linden cross the finish line in the 2018 Boston Marathon。 I love how this story switches back and forth between telling the story of the race at Boston and the rest of the story。 So well written。Loved the insight about what was going on with Des and the Hansons team leading up to the big race, and totally respect and appreciate Des's commentary on clean sport。 Reading this was such great inspiration before my own race this spring! I fully realize that people who do not love and appreciate Des Linden as much as I do might not give this book 5 stars, but to that I say。。。 why do you not love and appreciate Des Linden as much as I do???If you are unaware, Desiree Linden is an American Olympic Marathoner who, in 2018, in some of the worst weather imaginable, won the Boston Marathon, becoming the first American to do so in 33 years。 It was a moment that made me cry。 One reason I've always loved Des is because she also seems ver I fully realize that people who do not love and appreciate Des Linden as much as I do might not give this book 5 stars, but to that I say。。。 why do you not love and appreciate Des Linden as much as I do???If you are unaware, Desiree Linden is an American Olympic Marathoner who, in 2018, in some of the worst weather imaginable, won the Boston Marathon, becoming the first American to do so in 33 years。 It was a moment that made me cry。 One reason I've always loved Des is because she also seems very chill/real (she's also known for being a bourbon lover, which I'm not, but I've always appreciated that Des isn't trying to promote a restrictive lifestyle just to win races), something that was brought home even more when she started her podcast earlier this year with Kara Goucher and I wondered if I could really fall in love with her even more in a book? But, I did。Her story is told in alternating chapters between the details of her most famous race (Boston 2018), breaking it down from the bus ride to the start line, to crossing the finish line, and everything in between (yes, including when she slowed down to help Shalane get back into the race after a port-a-potty stop!)。 Those chapters made me try, but it was enhanced with all the other chapters detailed Des's backstory。 Including her struggles the year leading up to that famous race, and why she went into the race not sure she was even going to finish it。 Ugh, I just。。。 again, Des is my hero。 So of course I'm going to give this book 5 stars, I really can't be objective enough to decide if anyone else would love this book, but I'd like to think so。 。。。more

Loved this book and can’t imagine a better read during a Boston build。 I’ve been feeling like the race won’t go my way due to Achilles soreness, but reading Des’ trials and grit is inspiring。I loved the way the book opens with the 2018 marathon and the splicing between is effective。 The narrative is punchy at times but you’re never lost because there is such good flow。 I really admire Des’ principles and her asides about being into bourbon and still enjoying St。 Patrick’s day during training。 Am Loved this book and can’t imagine a better read during a Boston build。 I’ve been feeling like the race won’t go my way due to Achilles soreness, but reading Des’ trials and grit is inspiring。I loved the way the book opens with the 2018 marathon and the splicing between is effective。 The narrative is punchy at times but you’re never lost because there is such good flow。 I really admire Des’ principles and her asides about being into bourbon and still enjoying St。 Patrick’s day during training。 American running icon。If you’re a runner, this is another must-read。 Reminds me a lot of “Run to Overcome。” 。。。more

So many things resonated with me while reading this book。 First, Des has always been such a badass in my eyes and this book confirmed that for me。 To read about her rise to greatness as an underdog and “outsider” was so inspiring。 I also related deeply to her thyroid issues and how they have impacted her running because I struggle with hypothyroidism too。 Like her, I’ve also had to reframe the way I train and realize that some methods aren’t the best for me physically。 For years I tried to keep So many things resonated with me while reading this book。 First, Des has always been such a badass in my eyes and this book confirmed that for me。 To read about her rise to greatness as an underdog and “outsider” was so inspiring。 I also related deeply to her thyroid issues and how they have impacted her running because I struggle with hypothyroidism too。 Like her, I’ve also had to reframe the way I train and realize that some methods aren’t the best for me physically。 For years I tried to keep up with my friends who were training with the high volume and cumulative fatigue of the Hanson’s training plans (like Des) which left me injured and completely depleted。 It took years to heal from that and for me to realize that type of training is not what is best for my body。 I love her message that you don’t have to fit a cookie cutter image to be an amazing runner and there’s more than one way to get to the finish line successfully。 Thank you for this great book Des! 。。。more

I love running memoirs。 Love them。 For anyone who is even a casual runner or athlete, or a fan, you’ll appreciate this。 Nothing earth shattering is revealed here, but she tells her story with heart and grit, interspersed with a mile-by-mile description of her historic and monumental Boston win in 2018。 Read this。 You won’t regret it。
